U.S. LNG is Our Greatest Tool to Deter Russian Energy Aggression

PAGE Responds to the European Commission’s Roadmap to Phase Out All Imports of Russian Energy

WASHINGTON (May 6, 2025) – Today, the Partnership to Address Global Emissions (PAGE) issued the below statement in response to the European Commission releasing a roadmap to fully end EU dependency on Russian energy, which includes stopping all imports of Russian gas by the end of 2027.

U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to Europe have been instrumental in securing the continent's energy amid Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, supplying 40% of imports when Putin cut off gas supplies. U.S. LNG remains the cleanest and most secure solution for Europe to completely eliminate its reliance on Russian gas, which still accounts for nearly one fifth of the EU’s gas imports.

The EU roadmap presents an opportunity to expand U.S. LNG exports to Europe, which will bolster transatlantic energy and economic security. Notably, the report should accelerate efforts to promote long-term, flexible LNG contracts needed to reliably fill the supply gap left by Russia.

U.S. natural gas producers and transporters stand ready to support Europe’s strategic decision and continue providing reliable deliveries to our allies in Europe and around the world. U.S. companies lead the world in reducing methane emissions, making the U.S. an ideal partner for the EU to meet its methane regulations and climate obligations.

PAGE’s members are working with policymakers in the U.S. to advance policies that will enable us to remain the global guarantor of energy security. We must see critical policy changes like permitting reform for pipelines and LNG facilities, which will unlock U.S. natural gas, and to work with energy officials on both sides of the Atlantic to deter Russia’s energy aggression and fill the gap left by a reduction in supply.
